DIVE A LITTLE DEEPER – LENT 2023
Click Lent 2023 for more resources
Lent has three pillars: Prayer, Fasting, and Almsgiving. While we often highlight the first two, almsgiving can sometimes be forgotten.
It’s easy to become too attached to possessions or to our own wants and needs; through almsgiving, we remind ourselves that all we have comes from God, and that it is temporary! We step outside of our own little world and look to those around us, thinking of their needs first. What can we give away? How can we serve others?
How can you practice almsgiving this week?
GIVE TIME
- Volunteer at a food bank or homeless shelter
- Volunteer at the parish as a lector, Eucharistic minister, usher, children’s liturgy leader, etc.
- Set aside time in your week to call a friend or a relative with whom you haven’t spoken in a while, especially a parent or grandparent. During the call, focus on listening to them and loving them
- Do a chore for another family member
GIVE GIFTS
- Donate to your parish or sign up for regular automatic giving
- Support a lay missionary through an organization like CCO or NET
- Sponsor a child through Chalice, or give to Brother Blaise’s Peru mission using the envelopes in the pews
- Give blood
- Go through your closet and find clothes to give away
- Donate quality food or clothing to a ministry like Minwaashin Lodge or the local food bank. Don’t just give the cheapest things you have; give something of quality!
